Abandoned

I have always found that anything which has been abandoned and left to the ravages of nature is fascinating. The way that nature tries to take over, the colours fade and the many facets of rust begin to show. An artists dream and to try and reflect this in a painting is a great challenge.

Work in Progress

An abandoned Ferguson tractor near Eilean Donan castle.

Initial sketch done.

"Rust in Peace"

A 1940's Ford pick up changes into some amazing colours as the elements attack the metal.

"Last Stop"

A 1940's Ex St Louis streetcar abandoned in the Pennsylvania hillside. The rust is making itself evermore present. A fantastic subject for a painting.

"Sleeping Giant"

EMD 9A Passenger locomotive from 1961. This too has been left for many years and is well weathered. Rust is making its continuing presence felt and pushing its way through the fading livery. The sheer presence of this old leviathan is still there.

This painting was chosen as the winner in the UK "The Artist" magazine's March 2021 competition as part of their 90th anniversary celebrations. Paintings entered into this competition had to be based on the word 'Silence'. The judges commented " We felt Malcolm's watercolour painting of a rusting 1961 locomotive standing silently on a piece of abandoned track in the increasingly forlorn hope of a saviour, summed up this challenge perfectly"
